The Trip

This unique tour of Bolivia is being organized to support Shine A Light, one of the most innovative and successful non-profit organizations working with youth in Latin America. A portion of the trip cost will go directly to the programs of Shine A Light as they work to alleviate poverty through creativity. (Learn more about Shine A Light here.)

But this trip is also about experience, education, and a travel experience you will never forget.

We will meet in La Paz, Bolivia’s capital where we will spend three days exploring the city, the surrounding countryside, and volunteering with a Shine A Light project. This project, in the community of El Alto, is using theatre as an instrument of social change. We will also assist with a television program produced by the Aymara and Quechua youth of the community. This is an opportunity to experience Bolivia’s modern indigenous culture; a chance most tourists never have. After our days in La Paz we will fly to the upper Amazonian community of Rurrenabaque where we will voyage up river by boat to the Chalalan Lodge. Chalalan is a model of community based eco-tourism. The comfortable lodge is operated by the native village of San Jose de Uchupiamonas. Located in Madidi National Park, Chalalan is in the heart of one of the most diverse protected areas in the world. Our five days of exploring the rich Amazonian rainforest will not soon be forgotten.

After our days in the Amazon we will return to La Paz where you will be given the option of trekking three days from the high Andes to the cloudforest community of Coroico along an ancient Inca trade route, or spending those three days exploring the forests and walking the quiet cobblestone streets of Coroico.

The trip will be guided by the Executive Director of Shine A Light, Kurt Shaw and his brother, a naturalist guide, wildlife biologist, and photographer David Shaw. Both have extensive experience living, working, and travelling in Latin America. Additionally we will utilize local expertise by working with indigenous guides whenever we can.

Join us for a travel experience unlike any other!
