Volunteering
The Compa-Trono theater group, indigenous children from the shantytowns above La Paz, have broken new ground in integrating the arts and social change. They have toured Europe, Latin America, and the United States, presenting both comedy and drama based on the lives of rural immigrants to Bolivia's growing cities and on the history and myths of the Quechua and Aymara people.
We will meet the young artists through their art, as they present their plays and music in a theater they and their parents built high above La Paz. The building, overlooking the 20,000 foot peaks of the Andes and made entirely from recycled materials, has sparked an architectural revolution in the city, while the children's theater forms an integral part of the indigenous cultural renaissance in contemporary Bolivia.
Shine a Light is working with the child actors so that they can create a YouTube-based television series that turns the stories of their own lives into fiction. Volunteers can help develop the plot -- perhaps even appearing as extras -- and teach photography and cinematography as the kids teach us Aymara, Spanish, and the stories of their lives. Travelers with special skills are also invited to contribute teaching whenever they can.
